Our Mission: to provide the means by which Seniors may join together to enhance the lives of those aging on Salt Spring Island.
Salt Spring Island Seniors Centre began in 1987. The aim was to provide information to Seniors (+ 55 yrs.) on Salt Spring Island.
As times changed so did Seniors. In addition to information about health and lifestyle, and what’s on in town, we’ve created a clubhouse atmosphere where seniors play games like bridge, mah jongg and chess, and share interests in painting and meditation, theatre and music. We also have a driver’s program and so much more.
We have nearly 500 members and everyone brings their own touch of joy and caring to our centre. You’ll find what you want here – or, let us help you make a place for what you want to do: lectures, dancing, yoga, the sky’s the limit!
Membership is free at Seniors and we rely on your generous donations to keep our building running and our programs lively. Donations over $20.00 are tax deductible.
The Drivers Program
The desk dispatcher receives requests from local residents usually for drives to the doctors, often eye doctors, in Victoria, Saanich, Duncan, even Nanaimo. And then the dispatcher tries to find one of our volunteer drivers willing to do the drive. We have a good many satisfied customers agreeing it is an excellent service and costs the passengers nothing. Drivers are, if they like, paid according to the BC Government travel guidelines, or if not in cash, then in a charitable donation receipt for the same amount–which is, admittedly, an extremely paltry sum for the work involved. Nonetheless, our drivers and dispatchers are glad to help those in need so that when those in need are not in need, they will help us!
Hours for the drivers’ desk are 10 to 12 Monday to Friday. Direct line to the Drivers desk is 250-537-4635, open from 10 to 12 Monday to Friday. You may also make a booking by calling the office at 250-537-4604.
